The Ayurveda, siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy, Yoga and Naturopathy all have their own strength and in some cases these are more effective than the modern systems of medicine. though a large segment of population particularly among educated persons in urban areas and people in rural areas believe in these systems yet the spread of the systems in the country is quite inadequate mainly because of lack of awareness among the general public about the remedies while sitting at home and which are more cost effective and are commonly available at their door-steps.

The herbs and medicinal plants have since been traditionally obtained from forests, therefore, no systematic effect has been made in the past for developing the package of practices for cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs. However, because of shortage of medicinal plants in forests and availability of vast tracts of waste-land coupled with increasing practice of commercial cultivation private land due to attractive price for many medicinal plants, large plantations are expected to develop in coming years.

Plants have been one of the most important sources for medicines and essential oils since the beginning of the human civilization. During the early days, we were in a position to meet our requirements of medicinal and aromatic plants form the natural sources like forests and other open spaces. But, due to increasing utilization of land for food crops and deforestation, their availability from natural sources has considerably declined however, the demand for these crops and their products on the other hand, both for domestic use and for export has been increasing, necessitating the cultivation of these crops on an extensive scale.

Medicinal and aromatic crops are economically important as they provide the basic raw material for pharmaceutical, perfumery, flavour, soap and cosmetic industries throughout the world. Due to increase in population, standard of living and potential carcinogenic hazards posed by synthetic chemicals which form important ingredients of modern system of medicine and essential oil Industry, there has been enormous demand for these crops and their derivatives in recent years.

Although these plants are distributed all over the globe, most of them are localized in the tropical from where they are procured world over, to meet the local requirement. Because of he large area and wide variation in the soil and climatic conditions, India is one of the few countries where most of the medicinal and aromatic crops can be cultivated successfully in some parts or the other. Besides, the relatively cheap availability of labour also, provides a good scope to become the leading exporter the theses economically important crops.

Although India earns a foreign exchange of Rs.1,000/- millions annually from these crops, it is still insignificant and not commensurable with the natural resources available in the country. Also, as the produce from India is facing competition form other developing countries in the world for the quality of the produce and their price, there is a need therefore to make an organized effort in the introduction of medicinal and aromatic crops in India and encourage their production and utilization on competitive basis to meet the export needs.

Since, most of these crops are new and uncommon, the growers often lack knowledge in their scientific cultivation. The information on the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic crops is also scanty, scattered and mostly beyond the reach of even progressive farmers. As there we are of the very few Intuitions are providing information on the cultivation aspects of these crops.

Our plan to Develop a Model Harbal Form at Sathya Mangalam, and there we are going to cultivate and educate these farmers about the usefulness of growing medicinal plants and the agro-techniques for growing medicinal plants.
